L'édition 2012 du festival littéraire du Mail&Guardian se tiendra du mardi 28 août au dimanche 2 septembre au Market Theatre de Johannesburg. Avec des discussions sur des thèmes comme "No Time like the Present: Gordimer and Serote in Conversation" ou des débats revenant sur les "Stories of Exile", le festival se penchera comme chaque année sur ce qui s'écrit à propos de l'Afrique du Sud et de sa population. En partenariat avec la Saison de France en Afrique du Sud, le romancier, essayiste et auteur pour enfants Patrick Chamoiseau sera présent au festival. Après la projection le 28 août d'"Aliker", un film dont il a écrit le scénario, il débattra avec l'enfant terrible des lettres sud-africaines Breyten Breytenbach sur le thème "Parler plusieurs langues: discuter, écrire, traduire" (débat modéré par Georges Lory). Le programme du festival fera aussi place à des thèmes en rapport avec les grands enjeux littéraires du moment, comme le succès du livre électronique, l'accès des enfants à la littérature et les limites de la liberté d'expression.
